A number of Tasmania's native fauna are relocated, controlled or culled under permit, predominantly to minimise damage to commercial crops and property. For example, the trapping and relocation of seals around fish farms has increased over the past five years as a temporary measure to protect nets and fish stocks. The type of control measures used vary according to the species and size of the problem. Activities such as fencing, repellents, netting, metal collars and scare devices are effective for small- to medium-scale operations, whereas shooting and the poison-sodium monofluroacetate (1080)-are used for larger operations (State Biodiversity Committee 2002).

Native fauna control and culling may have adverse effects on the environment and non-target species in Tasmania. However, an assessment for this SoE Report was not possible within the time available.
