Aims of the Second SoE Report

Other objectives identified for this SoE Report by the Resource Planning and Development Commission are as follows:

  • consolidate current knowledge with a view to providing a generalised or 'snapshot' comment for decision-makers and the wider community on environmental conditions, environmental impacts and pressures, and management responses;

  • highlight the importance of long-term monitoring of the environment and natural resources;

  • identify and report on indicators of environmental condition, socio-economic pressures and management responses, and, either establish baselines for these indicators, or highlight where the information gaps, exist;

  • provide a consolidated reference and data source to assist in meeting the information needs of client groups, including industry, spheres of government, students and researchers, community organisations, and interested individuals;

  • establish web-based reporting system, which is more readily updateable and with better integration between background supporting content and recommendations; and

  • provide a means for industry, government agencies and community groups to report on their activities and progress, highlighting environmental and natural resource management achievements.
