Land systems containing areas of salt affected agricultural (i.e. private) land in Tasmania, 2000.

Land systems containing areas of salt affected agricultural (i.e. private) land in Tasmania, 2000.

Caption: The white areas (i.e. non-private land such as National Parks) were not assessed for the presence of salinity.

Notes: Map Legend: Nil: Land Systems where no salinity has been found. Moderate: Land systems units containing areas where plant and tree vigour is reduced, no salt tolerant species are found and where bare patches in pasture are usually less than one square metre. Severe: Land system units containing areas where there are extensive areas of bare ground and possibly salt crusts, trees are dead or dying and only salt tolerant species are present. Derived: Areas with no visual signs of salinity but are located within land systems in which salinity has been found elsewhere. Future land use change may induce visual signs.

Notes: The area of land affected by salinity in Tasmania was calculated using land systems as mapping units, which provides a broad 'picture' of the extent of salinity rather than the exact area. For example, in using land systems as mapping units, it is assumed that land within a land system is uniform and that the same severity of land degradation will occur within a land system regardless of where it occurs in the State (Grice 1995).
