Indicator description

Standardised mortality ratios (SMR) for selected causes of death for different settlement types.

Why is it indicative

There are variations in mortality rates among settlements of different types, with strikingly large differences in the rates for remote settlements compared to other settlement types (Newman et al. 1996). These differences are more pronounced for certain causes of mortality than for others, and these are selected for particular attention. While it is not possible to attribute to environmental differences all of the variations in mortality rates between settlements, it is highly likely that at least some of the variation is due to differences in environmental factors such as the quality of the water supply and sanitation services.

What does the data show

  • Diseases of the nervous system have risen significantly and some diseases of the respiratory system have risen

  • Some causes of death have fallen in prevalence such as diseases of the circulatory system
