Indicator description

Quantity of energy used in total, and in total as a percentage of GDP/GSP, for each of the following sectors: industry (manufacturing, mining, agriculture, and construction), services, transport, households and energy conversion (ANZECC 2001).

Why is it indicative

Energy is fundamental to the operation of modern urban environments, it is central to the provision of goods and services to production in industry, to mobility, to comfort, and to livability in the domestic context. Energy inevitably produces waste that can be harmful to the environment, especially in the case of energy produced by burning fuels. This indicator shows changes in the patterns of energy use in Tasmania. Improving energy efficiency will generally be environmentally beneficial at local, regional and global scales.

What does the data show

  • energy consumption continues to rise, although the rate of increase has declined over some years;

  • energy consumption per capita in Tasmania is the lowest of all states and territories;

  • manufacturing, transport and residential sectors are the largest consumers of energy; and

  • energy use is closely linked with Gross State Product in Tasmania (as it is with most economies), although the last year of available ABARE data for Tasmania showed a very slight increase in Gross State Product relative to energy use.

(a) Total energy consumption is the total quantity (in energy units) of primary and derived fuels consumed less the quantity of derived fuels produced. Note that these figures also include solvents, bitumen, lubricants and greases.

(b) Includes Australian Capital Territory.
