Indicator description

The proportion of coastline artificially modified (by deliberate engineering works) in each coastal georegion, and as a proportion of the total State coastline. Does not include coastlines unintentionally modified by human activity (e.g. by erosion) or by deliberate non-engineering activities such as planting marram grass.

This is an indicator of pressure.

Why is it indicative

Although artificial physical modification of shorelines is not the only human pressure that can affect natural coastal geomorphic processes, it is a major category of disturbance that not only affects geomorphic processes but also the physical integrity of significant coastal geoheritage sites. Artificial modification of shorelines has major impacts on geomorphic processes such as coastal sediment transport (both longshore and onshore-offshore), and can cause major or total modification of natural coastal forms. Considered together with other indicators, this indicator provides a useful measure of the extent to which human activities are likely to have impacted on processes along coastlines.

What does the data show

  • Out of a total Tasmanian coastline length of 6,438.6 km (at 1:25,000 scale and including most islands but excluding most small islets and rocks), 143.5 km (2.2%) is identified as wholly or substantially artificial.

  • Of the 132 distinctive coastal georegions around the Tasmanian coast, 92 have no substantial artificially modified shorelines, while 40 have some degree of artificial coastline.

  • The three georegions with the highest proportions of artificial coastlines are:

    • 0006322: moderately exposed steeply sloping coastal terrain developed on folded structurally dismembered sedimentary and volcano-sedimentary sequences (22.95% artificial of total 21.8 km length)

    • 0001222: moderately exposed gently to moderately sloping coastal terrain developed on Tertiary sediments (21.76 % artificial of total 9.5 km length)

    • 0002132: sheltered coasts backed by low-lying plains developed over Tertiary basalt bedrock (20.31% artificial of total 49.4 km length)

Data

The distribution of substantially or wholly artificial shorelines (red) around the Tasmanian coastline is presented in the figure below (click on figure to enlarge).

Artificial shorelines around Tasmania

A total of 132 distinctive coastal georegions have been classified around the Tasmanian coast, most of which comprise a number of separate coastal segments. Of these coastal georegions, 92 are not identified as having any substantial artificially modified shorelines. However, 40 coastal georegions include varying percentages of artificial coastline.

The following table lists the 40 georegions having a proportion of artificial coastline. A full version of the results including all georegions can be downloaded.
