Indicator description

Area of plantations of native and exotic species expressed for a number of environmental regions. This is based on Indicator 2.1 C 'Area, age-class and future yield of plantations of native and exotic species' from the Sustainability Indicators for Tasmanian Forests (Forest Practices Board 2002).

Why is it indicative

Monitoring plantation area is undertaken as part of the RFA. The RFA review notes that an increase in the size and quality of the plantation estate is a significant element in the longer-term sustainability and growth of the forest industry in Tasmania (Forest Practices Board 2002). Plantation development has permitted greater areas of reservation of native forests while maintaining the forest industry. Plantation development is an intensification of land use, which has potential impacts on biodiversity, hydrologic and geomorphic processes, and landscape values. However, the impacts of plantation development are scale and context dependent.

What does the data show

Key general trends in plantation development in Tasmania include the following:

  • Rapid expansion in eucalypt plantation establishment during 1996-2001 increasing in area by sixty percent or 44,000 hectares (Forest Practices Board 2002).
  • An increase of 11,900 hectares in the area of softwood plantation (Forest Practices Board 2002).
  • The largest percentage areas of plantation development by bioregion occur in the Ben Lomond and Northern Slopes Bioregions, which contain 57,913 ha of softwood and hardwood plantations (8.8% of the area of the Bioregion) and 69,706 ha (11.2% of the area of the Bioregion), respectively.
  • The largest percentage areas of plantation development by catchment occur in the Cam and Emu catchments in the north of the State, which contain 7,770 ha of softwood and hardwood plantations (26.9% of the area of the catchment) and 7,523 ha (29.5% of the area of the catchment), respectively. The Arthur catchment contains 16,632 ha of plantation, the largest total area of plantation within a catchment. Vegetation changes over large areas are an issue for water resource managers. Conversion of existing stands of eucalypt to pine, pasture to either eucalypt or pine, or existing tree cover to plantations, all change water yield. It should also be noted that estimates provided are based on broader-scale planning and management catchments. Catchments at a finer-scale may be more or less affected by plantation development.
  • Plantation development presently occurs in only isolated areas containing karst in Tasmania, but is most prevalent in Permian limestones. This karst type has a total area of 21,640 ha with plantation development occurring on 1,017 ha (4.7%). Plantation development is a potential issue for management of karst in some parts of Tasmania. Karst systems rely on the maintenance of hydrologic and geomorphic processes, which depend on water availability and water quality.
  • The Visual Management System (Forest Commission 1990) divides the land area of Tasmania into broad physiographic regions called 'landscape character types'. These are areas with common distinguishing visual characteristics. Each type is an area of land with common distinguishing visual characteristics, including landform, water forms and vegetation. Plantation development is most heavily concentrated in the North West Hills and Plains Character Unit, which contains 68,122 ha of hardwood and softwood plantation (16.1% of the total area).
