Objective

To ensure land use capability is taken into account in land use planning and development decision making.

Recommendation

It is recommended that land use capability assessment be integrated with the Tasmanian Resource Management and Planning System through the proposed State Policy on the Protection of Agricultural Land, the Planning Policy Framework and/or a Planning Note, and local government planning schemes.

This information is available from Volume 2 of the last SoE Report (SDAC 1997), which can be downloaded. The final objective, final recommendation, and a summary of key management actions are detailed below.

Actions taken

There has been some progress made in addressing the objective of this recommendation on land use capability since the previous SoE Report (1997), including the following.

• The State Policy on the Protection of Agricultural Land 2000 has been implemented, with local government now implementing land capability assessment into planning schemes. However, at this stage the land use capability mapping is not at a sufficient resolution to adequately inform the application of the State Policy, and is reliant upon specific development proposals undertaking more detailed local assessments of land use capability at finer scales.
   
• The Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment has concluded its land capability mapping program with completion of eleven 1:100,000 map sheets, and intends to undertake the remaining regions on the east coast and Derwent Valley through soil capability models rather than field mapping.
