| Recommendation 33: Review of public reserves | Index of 1997 recommendations |
|
To maintain the biodiversity conservation values of reserves under the Crown Lands Act 1976. It recommended that the Department of Environment and Land Management acts upon a recommendation of the Public Land Use Commission Inquiry into Tasmanian Crown Land Classifications to undertake a systematic assessment of public reserves under the Crown Lands Act 1976 to determine whether the classification of each reserve is appropriate (in terms of its values and uses) and whether any land may be available for disposal. This information is available from Volume 2 of the last SoE Report (SDAC 1997), which can be downloaded. The final objective, final recommendation, and a summary of key management actions are detailed below. There has been some progress made in addressing this recommendation since the previous SoE Report (1997). A systematic review of the Tasmanian reserve system was undertaken through the Regional Forest Agreement, resulting in some significant and important additions to the reserve system. Structures also now exist to undertake conservation initiatives on private land through the Private Forests Reserve Program and Protected Areas on Private Land Program. |
