Objective

To improve indoor air quality.

Recommendation

It is recommended that the Departments of Community and Health Services and Environment and Land Management develop an education program on indoor air quality requirements which targets designers, builders, building owners and managers and approving authorities.

Key issues

This information is available from Volume 2 of the last SoE Report (SDAC 1997), which can be downloaded. The final objective, final recommendation, and a summary of key management actions are detailed below.

Actions taken

An education program on indoor air quality requirements has not been specifically developed since the previous SoE Report (1997). However, some progress has been made in addressing the objective of this recommendation on indoor air quality, including the following.

  • The banning of smoking in many enclosed public spaces has been an important response in improving one significant contributor to indoor air quality problems in these areas.

  • Two major studies on indoor air (non-industrial work environments) have been undertaken at University of Tasmania (Mesaros 1995; Mesaros 1999). This has contributed to some much needed information on the state of some Tasmanian indoor environments.
